AbstractDuring February 7 to 16 1980, Central Brazil and Eastern Amazon recorded unusually high rainfall rates reaching over 150 mm.day-1 in some gages, with 10 day accumulated totals exceeding 800 mm. The associated atmospheric phenomenon was analyzed using NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data, river discharge and observed rainfall data. A dry air mass from Northern Hemisphere, likely associated with a frontal passage, entered Northern South America and converged with a Southern Hemisphere frontal system originating an intense convective band at about 9°S, E-W oriented. The mean rainfall, recorded in the region in that month, was 520 ±120 mm. As a result of the high rainfall totals, Tocantins river March mean discharge, recorded at Tucurui, was 68,000m3s-1 against a 24,000 m3s-1 historical mean and Xingu river mean discharge was 32,000 m3s-1 with long term mean of 18,000m3s-1 at Altamira.
